Home Improvement Database

My library offers an online database all about home improvement, and I wasn’t even familiar with it until recently! This database contains information about how to accomplish all those items on your honey-do list. It also has articles about some more unusual hobbies, such as raising chickens and beekeeping. This database has many manuals and instruction sheets for the multitude of activities you might want to try. There are printer-friendly versions of these sheets for easy printing and use.

How to Locate the Home Improvement Database

This database is easy to find. You can locate it on the library homepage, but there are still two screens that you need to click through to access it. I wish the database would appear immediately after your library card number is validated; but no, you will need to choose this database again from a list.

Database Organization

The home screen of the database is clean and understandable. There are seven main topic divisions, and an A – Z listing of all possible projects. Within each category, there are further subdivisions. The project pages are located within these subdivisions.

  • A – Z Topics
  • Decorating
  • Electrical
  • Maintenance
  • Outdoor
  • Plumbing
  • Remodeling
  • Woodworking

Some Unusual or Unexpected Projects

There are more than the expected projects in this database. I was surprised by the range of projects available in this database. Here are a few projects that I didn’t expect to find!

Would you like some welding project instructions? Go to the Decorating Topic; choose Welding, then browse the options. You could make a truck rack for transporting building materials, a square fire pit, or an iron cross to hang on your wall.

Are you doing electrical work on your house? (Know your abilities, and call a professional, if needed.) Would you like to have a circuit map for one of the common types of outlets in your home? Go to the Electrical Topic; choose Circuit Maps, and then Individual Circuit Maps. Browse the different types of circuit maps available.

Do you want to know how to pest-proof your home? Keep those mice, bats, squirrels, etc. out of your retreat by reading an article in the Maintenance section of the database; choose the Critters article under Vacation Homes.

Would you like to become a beekeeper? Go to the Outdoor Topic; click on the Hobby Farms option, then Raising Animals. The beekeeper article can be found here.

Are you concerned about the chi in your home? Learn about the principles of Feng Shui by going to the Remodeling topic. There are separate articles on each room of the house.

Do you love your pet? Want to make some furniture just for him/her? Go to the Woodworking topic, and choose the Pet Furniture option to see a list of projects. You could learn how to install a pet door or make a scratching post for a cat!

Last Thoughts

This database is large and diverse. It also contains videos and other articles about dealing with contractors and a glossary of terms.
